Eckhoff Strikes Out 10 to Beat Reeds Spring

Posted: 23 Aug 2012 07:43 PM PDT

Stephanie Eckhoff struck out ten batters and allowed only two hits for the second game in a row, as Republic beat Reeds Spring on the road 3-1.

The Lady Tigers trailed for the first time on the young season after Reeds Spring scored an unearned run in the bottom of the third.

A half-inning later, Republic struck back. Morgan Cantrell led off with a single, went to second on a sacrifice by Caty Eby, and advanced to third on a passed ball. Lauren Strobel drew a walk, and Eckhoff reached on a bunt single. Rachael Michaelis gave the Lady Tigers the lead with an RBI single, driving home two. Later in the inning, Taylor Gold drew a bases loaded walk to make the score 3-1.

Eckhoff had two hits and a walk to lead the Lady Tigers offense. Gold led the team with two RBIs.

The win improves Republic’s record to 2-0. The Lady Tigers return to action Monday in their first home game, against Monett.

In the JV game, the Lady Tigers scored four runs in the first inning on the way to a 6-4 victory. Emily Hall was 2-for-2 for Republic. Molly Carter added two hits for Republic.

The JV Lady Tigers also run their record to 2-0.

Girls Tennis Team Tops Nixa to Open Season

Tennis Girls vs Nixa 088

Questions about depth for the defending district champion Republic Lady Tigers can be put to rest for now. The Lady Tigers outplayed Nixa in a COC battle to start the season, winning six of nine varsity matches.

Coach Eric Hanson had worried about whether the youngsters on his varsity squad would step up to replace the players he lost to graduation last year.

“I’m happy with the good start. You always look at that first one out as a gauge on how you’re going to do,” says Hanson. “We’ve got some things to work on, but overall I’m pretty happy.

“We showed some young talent stepping up and playing to the position they’re in,” he says.

Republic’s lead player, Samantha Minor, dominated her first singles match of the year.  She blew by Lyndsey Hamilton 8-0. Danielle Hopkins (8-4), Michaela Moore (8-3), and Ta’lor Sandul (8-3) also won their singles matches.

Meagan McCord, and Rebecca Ledford had the two losses in singles for Republic, with McCord’s defeat coming in a tiebreaker.

In doubles, Republic took two of three matches.  Hopkins and Moore won their match 8-2, and Ledford and Sandul won theirs 8-3. Republic’s only varsity doubles loss came from Minor and McCord, who lost 9-8 in a tiebreaker.

Republic’s record is 1-0.
